It's nice that there's so much development downtown, but it seems like some of it is despite the Birmingham city government. They get the benefit and perhaps the credit, but don't appear to be very intelligent about encouraging development and residents downtown. To this point, there doesn't appear to be any concerted city effort to deal with the homeless population. There are few non-profits involved, but the city appears to try to ignore them. Housing and re-education programs might accomplish something. There's obviously a ton of city housing available for people on welfare, but no one appears to care about the homeless population. Further, city police are basically non-existent downtown unless there's an incident and someone calls them. I think a significant police presence in the pockets of redevelopment would make current and potential residents feel safer about living downtown. Also, the city really needs to position police up and down I-65 during rush hour issuing tickets and slowing down traffic - perhaps that would diminish the number of daily wrecks along that corridor. Lastly, the city is terrible about parking tickets, and in places such as in front of City Federal, where there is no clear marking as to who can park there or why. Does the city not realize that there's no other way to move items in or out of that building other than to park there? It's only legal for a business to park there - not a resident who is moving something in or out of the building. How much sense does that make? Do you not want people to live downtown?
