After that, the first nurse brought me to an exam room and asked questions about my medical history. I was really impressed with how friendly and social she was, and talking to her helped ease any anxiety I had about the exam. After she finished with my medical history, she directed me to undress and cover myself with a paper sheet while I waited for the doctor.
Dr. Fox was also very friendly and professional, and made me feel at ease with the procedure. The annual exam includes a breast exam, Pap smear, and palpation of the uterus. This was my very first time getting both a breast exam and a Pap smear and I was happy with how easy and painless it all was. The whole exam was done pretty quickly. After the exam she gave me a ton of free condoms as well as three months of birth control pills, and she told me to come back when I've finished the pills and let her know if there are any side effects, so she can either switch to a different type or give me the rest of the year's worth of pills.
I have medicaid and all I ever go to this clinic for is birth control. The only complaint I have is the long wait in the waiting rooms. I usually spend about an hour and sometimes 2 in the waiting room on a week day even if I get there early. The staff is always polite and nice to me and I have had no problems otherwise.
I had a great experience here, specifically getting an annual exam done in the Family Planning clinic. I highly recommend calling at 7:00 AM sharp on a weekday and making an appointment, as I did. I was given a 9:45 AM appointment time. I live closer to the Central Health Center in downtown Birmingham, but I made the drive to this location because it has its own parking lot and having to try to find a parking spot downtown is a nightmare.
After a little more time in the waiting room I met with another woman who checked my ID, proof of income and proof of residence, and verified that my Medicaid (Plan First) coverage was active. She then asked me to provide a urine sample, which I was instructed to leave inside a little door built into the restroom wall.
I personally thought this place was Great! Been coming here since October. I had my Maternity Appts here. The Nurse Staff were always so Friendly, made me Feel comfortable.
After a bit of a longer wait in the waiting room, I was called back to begin my exam. A very friendly nurse took my weight and blood pressure. When it came time to draw blood I let her know that I have very difficult veins, so she asked another nurse to do the blood draw in order to spare me excessive pokes. She was able to draw enough blood to do the tests, which is impressive since I've had blood draws canceled outright before because they just couldn't get any blood.
Overall this place is pretty great. I was worried it was going to be a huge hassle since some county health clinics aren't the best, but I have no complaints here. The only thing is that I did spend maybe 45 minutes in the waiting room, but that's not bad at all especially considering this is a county health clinic. If you need an exam, birth control, testing, or any other kind of family planning services then you shouldn't hesitate to make an appointment here.
Also my kids were seen by the Dentist here. They Did a great Job working with them... so Far never had any issues with long wait times.
